This is my first ever IMDb review, and this movie is the main reason I decided to register. I had exceptionally high standards for The Five-Year Engagement and tried to lower them before walking into the movie theater, but I couldn't as the trailers for this movie made it out to look hilarious. Well, I'm glad to report back that this movie was the FUNNIEST and most ENTERTAINING movie experience I have ever been to. A lot of critics have been saying it was alright or overlong. Being 124 minutes long I personally didn't want the movie to end. I loved Bridesmaids, in fact it was in <more>
my top 10 funniest movies ever. Now, not only is The Five-Year Engagement my number one on the list of funniest movies ever, but its also number one on my favorite movies ever! Emily Blunt is a great actress and I admire her even more after seeing this, but the actress who I actually really loved and surprised me was Alison Brie. What an amazing English accent she pulled off. Jason Segel was also great, as usual. Every single joke in the movie is unique and ultimately hilarious. You couldn't even tell which scenes were improvised and which scenes were scripted. Another great quality in the movie is the seriousness. I love comedies but they can't be too silly. They have too not only make you laugh, but also care for the characters because if you don't care for the characters in a movie, you don't really care for the movie. The Five-Year Engagement is raunchy, hilarious, sad, romantic and just pure incredible. I'm seeing it again this weekend and I'm also buying it on DVD to add to my collection. A true classic.
I thought this movie looked funny, adorable and refreshing! What a good movie should be ! The couple was awkward but adorable, and the more they dragged on their engagement. It made the movie seem even funnier! I have seen a lot of romantic comedies before, some with more romance than comedy! Others were raunchy and not at all romantic nor funny! But this one blended the two perfectly. The way they were meant to be, I would like to see a movie. That actually makes me happy , all the way through! So if you like movies , with quirky and dysfunctional yet humorous relationships. This is the <more>
movie to go see, but if you want raunchy then go see the Bridemaids!
Most imperfect moments are most important. If you like romance, this is the movie.
Extremely funny, but dark and serious at times (by hhz76)
This movie was surprisingly funny and definitely had a lot of the same humor as Bridesmaids did. If you enjoyed Bridesmaids, you will definitely enjoy this movie.Basically, the movie was funny, yet serious, and very enjoyable to watch. Some of the humor is really unique and I wouldn't say there was anything in there that would make you roll your eyes or think "that's so cliché!" Some of the parts were truly laugh out loud and had the audience in tears.Humor aside, the movie did seem to have a good message. It showed the problems sometimes couples face with relationships, <more>
and there are also some simple twists in there that keep the plot rolling. All in all, the movie is fun, will make you laugh, and is probably worth seeing.
a lot of these reviews are saying this movie is bad or disappointing, but honestly its the first movie in a long time that i could relate to. another aspect i love is the dialogue, it doesn't take itself too seriously and has real life comedy, instead of trying to be a huge blockbuster. many think thats a bad thing, but why would you want to see another Hollywood dramatized cheesy romantic comedy?! its clearly underrated, jason segal and chris pratt fans should love this movie thoroughly. the only thing that i wasn't a huge fan of was the British accents, seems forced at first but the <more>
movie is so long that by the end it all comes together and warms your soul. if you've ever had to move away because of some girl, you should see this, very relatable comedy, that's all.
I watched this last night, and was really surprised how funny it was. Jason Segal and Emily Blunt pull off the comedy with class. The first part of the movie starts a little slow but warms up nicely. Chris Pratt keeps the laughs coming with some of the funniest and dirty lines in the movie. If you are fan of the Judd Apatow factory, you will like this. I also have to say that the "fight's" that the couple deal with are some of the most "real" couple disagreements I have seen in a movie. The movie moves through the struggles that many couples deal with. While it has <more>
its "About Last night" comparison from the 80's...Its fresh and definitely worth the watch...albeit, it is a little longer than I would have liked, it was funny.
Enjoyable, Funny, some Dark humor, some parts dragged (by chris-337-786107)
Enjoyable funny movie that portrayed the modern day conflict of a couple with two careers. Who gives up what and why and how willing are they to accept the true full meaning of the compromise. Several good points are made and good analogies used.Humor works for both guys and gals.Without spoiling anything, the element used to mark time is somewhat dark.Be familiar with the song 'Cu cu ru cu cu Palamo'. It is sung very well in Spanish early in the course of the movie with no translation but is tone setting for the movie. Used again in the credits. At just over 2 hours, this movie seemed <more>
to drag at some points and several scenes could have been edited down a wee bit. Don't need to see something for 30 seconds or 2 minutes when the point is made and understood in considerably less time.I don't see any academy nods for this one nor would I have expected any for this genre of movie but it was an enjoyable movie for an evening. My wife and son were there and enjoyed it as well.
FUNNY MOVIE... a lot like Bridesmaids... we laughed and laughed!! (by spc-campbell)
My husband is the one that insisted we see this movie and both he and I are glad we did. I have read all of the user reviews 12 so far and I'm surprised by the negative ones. Some reviewers were shocked by profanity and vulgarity... but The Five Year Engagement has an R rating... so there should have been no surprise or dismay at the R-rated content. Other reviewers say the movie wasn't funny at all... which makes me wonder more about those reviewers than the movie itself. I found The Five Year Engagement to be extremely funny. I appreciated the obvious and other times subtle humor <more>
that kept both of us laughing and entertained throughout the entire movie. I thought all roles were well developed and that all actors had chemistry and interacted well together. On our drive home from the theater, my husband and I laughed the whole way home as we remembered and recounted funny parts of the movie... something that is is unusual for us to carry on so long about a movie ... and we see a lot of movies. The Five Year Engagement reminded me a lot of Bridesmaids... similar rhythm, humor, and style. I thought it was great!
For Those of Us Who Miss Going to the Movies for Fun (by danhollow)
The Five-Year Engagement is the kind of film that doesn't get made very often anymore. Or at least not the kind to see a wide release. It's an honest, sweet, kind, occasionally crude romance about two people as natural to us as Tom and Sue who live down the lane.Tom Solomon Jason Segel and Violet Barnes Emily Blunt are in love. Not that kind of invasive love where we're always watching them get way too personal just to draw out time, but the kind of love where there are no other options, it's either each other or die alone. They love the awkward and stupid details of each <more>
other that would annoy everyone else. And a year after they first meet, Tom proposes to Violet, on New Year's Eve. From there it's straight to the wedding and the kids, right? Wrong. Life doesn't always go so easily, and Violet and Tom find their wedding getting delayed again and again."Life is what happens when you're making other plans", that's the best way to describe the underlying idea for this film. You meet a girl, you get to know her, you propose, every place is busy, you delay for a little while, she gets a psychology gig in Michigan, you temporarily leave your successful job to be with her for a couple years, you find another job, you make new friends, she makes new friends, a couple of years becomes another couple of years, you take up hunting, you decorate the house with the spoils of your hunting trips, you grow a bizarre beard, you spiral into discontent, she tries to help, you decide to get married no matter what, you settle on anything if it means you two will be married sooner, you find out she kissed her boss, you chase her boss down, turns out he knows parkour, you get your throat punched, you find a co-worker and she gets freaky on you, you wander drunk into the woods with no clothes on, you wake up the next morning with frostbite on your toe, she still cares about you, you care about her, she wants to stay, you can't stand it another minute, you argue, she argues, you go your separate ways. That's about all I'll say I'll leave some for people to see , but you get the general idea. This is a movie that's genuinely heartwarming and realistic for anyone who knows the ups and downs of love. They do throw a few bits of comedy in every once in a while, but never anything too unrealistic to take you out of things. One thing I must note is that I watch a lot of movies, but I knew none of the actors in this movie outside of Segel and Blunt. They have a very diverse and fun group of characters, and it really helps make everything feel more like the real world. This is a movie for people who like going to see movies because they think they might just find something they can relate to.
